This is a fun finish late 2025. I have been admiring the work of @stephanieshoreart with her layered pieces. She doesn't do workshops or lectures but she did do some process photos, so I adventured through that for this sweet little piece!
For the "12 x 12" art group of the Royal City Quilters Guild, we have been making small pieces in response to prompts. Every other month we have a new prompt - this is in response to "Light" and "Metallic".
It is entirely improv raw edge fusible piecing. All of the fabrics were first pressed onto Steam-A-Seam Light II. Then bits were cut out. The first layer is a collage of improv pieces, with the aim of having lighter tones in the middle, flowing to darker tones around the edges.
The next step is to take more of the fused bits, cut those into fun shapes then into skinny strips. These are pressed onto the foundation layer. These skinny strips let the foundation fabrics and shapes peek through, creating interesting textures and shapes. I spent an entire day working on this at a retreat with lovely quilters from RCQG near New Hamburg.
When I was happy with the placement of everything, a solid steam pressing permanently fuses the entire piece together. Layered the top, batting and back together and lightly quilted this on my domestic with metallic thread.
Faced this fun piece and added the label and hanging sleeve and it is officially finished!
