Client Quilt - Hexie fun from Periwinkle Quilt

What a fun quilt this client quilt is!  I met this quilter at a modern quilting retreat - we were lanyard swap buddies!  Have been at a couple of retreats with her since then and it's always wonderful to catch up.

This quilt is inspired by a tutorial by the magnificent Jenny Doan from Missouri Star Quilts - her "Periwinkle" quilt (https://youtu.be/ubaCTtzKfR0).  In the client version, she swapped the solid backgound for the star points, and instead of plain triangle points, she paper pieced strips.
Because that's what creative, modern quilters / artists do - start with a simple design, vision wonderful things, and make it happen.
There are so many fun fabrics in this - it will be a fantastic "I Spy" quilt!
In choosing the quilting designs, we were first going to go with a spidery / Hallowe'en feel, but the quilt had a different thing to say.  One of the client's friends thought the colourful hexies look like beach umbrellas.  So we decided to go with a beachy theme - perhaps a view from the seagull flying overhead.

This photo has the quilt still on the frame.  On the white background, we have waves undulating across the quilt.
Each "umbrella" has its own fun design.  Arcs, lines.

Feathers, curves.

Crosshatching.

Spiralling arcs.
Triangles.
Ribbons.
Curves with bubbles.

And in the background, I played with beachy images here and there.  At the top, a flock of seagulls flying overhead.
A pair of gulls flying.
A turtle in the sand.
Footprints.
And a grand gull just walkin' around.
Backing choice was this beautiful acqua bubbles fabric - "Spot On".

White Hab 'n Dash Glide thread throughout.
