This magnificent quilt is "Crimson Poppy", a Quiltworx design.
The quilt is from Chantal, owner of Hyggeligt Fabrics. You can get this and many more Quiltworx patterns from Hyggeligt.
Here, the quilt is still on the frame. The tools for this quilt - three different curved Quilted Pineapple rulers, straight rulers from Quilters Apothecary, and Hab 'n Dash Glide thread.
The Kaffe Fassett fabrics are just so amazing in this quilt! Hyggeligt Fabrics carries Canada's largest selection of Kaffe Collection fabrics.
The dilemma in deciding on how to quilt this amazing quilt, is that the quilting on the bright Kaffe fabrics will not actually show up very well. So the decision was to add texture to those areas, not detailed or fancy quilting where that would not show up.
The spiky areas have simple echoed spikes in the light areas, the spike is ditched, and without quilting in that area, puff right up with the lofty Quilters Dream Wool batting.
The area that really had my thinking cap running on overtime, is the light area shown above. This was the last area to get quilted, when I finally had an idea of what might be a fun feature. Echoing the shape with thin double lines, and extending those in the top part to a curved cross hatch, resulted in this design, one of my most favourite areas in the quilt!
The dark sections of the star points have matchstick quilting in Damson thread, a dark purple. The effect pushes the dark area to the background and lets the pops of bright fabrics shine.
The centre of the star has this beautiful floral design. There are two prints alternated here, and I stitched simple curved lines into the busier print, and one-sided feathers in the other print. The curves add lots of movement to the centre. The dark points of the star have spiky lines.
Moving a little further away from the quilt, all of the features of the individual areas come together for some serious magnificence.
The centre of the quilt just explodes with joy!
In the outer edge, the beautiful florals were not going to show any quilting detail, so those areas received curved crosshatching.
The outermost areas have a double beadboard, which nicely frames the quilt.
You wanted another view of the centre, didn't you!
The backing for this quilt is one of the gorgeous Kaffe wide backs. I used cream bobbin thread throughout the quilt, which just disappears into the back.
These shots of the backing were taken at night. I had the quilt draped over the railing and walking by, realized how well you can see the textures from the shadow play with low light. You can see the feathers a bit better in this light, and the various ruler work treatments.
Every seam in this quilt is ditched.
This quilt is 60" x 60", received over 225,000 stitches. I used Quilters Dream 100% wool as the top layer of batting for its magnificent loft, and Quilters Dream 70/30 as the base layer, for stability. The threads are all Hab 'n Dash Glide, in Pearl, Coral, Passion and Damson
Being able to work on this quilt was an absolute joy. The colours make my eyes so happy, and I love the textures as you run your hand over the quilt. Thank you Chantal for having me quilt this beauty for you!
